Memorial Day Fun!

Since Jon is taking an LSAT class every Saturday of the ENTIRE SUMMER (boo!), we decided to go on a weekend trip over Memorial Day Weekend. Normally, this would be a bad idea- a lot of traffic, a lot people and just a very touristy time to do anything except sit at home and chill. But no, not this year! We left on Saturday morning and arrived in Jamestown around 10:00. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the "new world". There are actually two Jamestown sites now. There is the Jamestown Settlement which is just a reproduction of what the site could have looked like, but it's not even on the land that was Jamestown way back when. You can also walk through a reproduction of a Native American village, which must have been fun for the zillions of boy scout there. . . .and us of course! But then, the cool part is the Historic Jamestowne site (note the "e"!). This is the actual site of the town and they are digging up artifacts and having all sorts of historical fun there. I think they only recently (like in the 90's) discovered the real site, so that is why there are two sites now. Real and fake, got it? The first picture here is a reproduction of the fence around Jamestown at the real site. It sits on the James River.

The next day, we went to Colonial Williamsburg. So, in 1699, the capital of Virginia moved to Williamsburg, from Jamestown, and there it sat for a long long time. The site now is all a reproduction, although a lot parts of buildings survived, including the Governors Palace- which is in the next picture. I could be totally wrong about that though- I was just there for the geeky three-corner hats they sell (which we didn't buy . . .darn it!)

And the last day, we went to Yorktown, which was essentially the last battle of the Revolutionary War. That's us in the lastpicture in front of a cannon. Battlefields are cool because for the most part, you can sit in your air conditioned car and drive around and see all of the major places. Except when your husband makes you get out to go walk to a real live "redoubt" that survived all these years (think, a hole in the ground with high walls that a lot soldiers hung out in.)

Overall, a good trip, but very very hot and humid. And I ran into a roommate from my last semester single at BYU- and I totally didn't recognize her. Blast from the past!
